The premise
A husband and his wife Diana pick what looks like a peaceful family site beside a lake. It is in fact a private couples’ campground with house rules everybody has learned except him. That is Camp Rules, a twist on the usual vacation mix-up. Mona Newman is the credited lead, and the series came out in the last week of October.
Pitching up
The opener builds the place out of overheard fragments. One voice says she liked the way a woman looked at him. Someone asks what the sign said, the answer is “family campground”, and a friend who cannot read takes the blame. A neighbour admires the pitch, then asks whether they need help getting the awning up, which is a two-person job. The man at the gate has told them everybody shares the fire. Later someone is told she will freeze without shoes and asks to be kept warm, quiet hours begin, and the neighbours say goodnight to the lovebirds. The last exchange is an accusation that he wants her; he starts to deny it, and the reply is that it is a shame, because the speaker wants to watch.
Nothing is shown, although the final line leaves no doubt about the direction.
What the rules are
The next episode needs registration on Candy, and three more are behind tokens. As the opener only hints at the rules, we are not rating Camp Rules yet.
Price tag
Thirty-six tokens, twelve for each of the final three episodes.
Shared holidays
Lodge 69 Was Double Booked is the closest cousin, with two couples forced under the same roof, while Midnight Compartment does the sleeper-cabin version. Mona’s Worst Enemy is the Mona Newman series we have reviewed in depth, and British Summer with my Stepbro is her highest-scored, at 5.0.
Where this leaves us
An inventive premise that explains itself in a minute: a place built around one social rule and one newcomer who has not read it. The free episode is mostly set-up, so it works best as a trailer for what follows.
