The premise
A wife books a babysitter and heads out for the night, without ever asking what the sitter might do with her husband once the children are in bed. That is the whole hook of Our New Babysitter, one of three series Candy released in mid-October. Sofia Fletcher plays the sitter, and Candy tags it Wife.
Bedtime in twenty minutes
Episode one is short and confident. The sitter has two kids asleep within twenty minutes, mentions that his wife told her to help herself to anything in the house, and stops to admire the wife’s picture. When her own boyfriend calls she tells him babysitting is very hard and she cannot talk; asked whether that was her boyfriend, she answers “for now”. Her last question is when the wife gets home. Midnight, he says, and she reminds him she is paid by the hour.
The dialogue is full of double meanings, but nothing beyond flirting happens on screen.
Until midnight
We stopped at the end of the opener. To go on you need a free Candy account for episode two, then tokens for the other three; together they fill the hours until the wife returns. Ratings will come once we have seen more of it.
The bill
Unlocking the paid episodes takes 36 tokens, twelve per episode.
Other hires on Candy
A wife who brings someone into the house and then leaves is a familiar Candy formula: The Maid My Wife Hired plays it almost silently and My Wife Hired My Nurse plays it for laughs. Our New Babysitter is the most direct of the three, with the sitter making the moves from the first minute. Sofia Fletcher’s earlier series, My Girlfriend’s Twin, holds three stars for explicitness and an overall score of three.
Where we stand
Quick, flirtatious and very much built around its lead. If you liked the other hired-help series, this is the same idea with less hesitation.
